Flying with pets takes some planning and forethought. It's important that you first get information from the airlines about their specific rules for pet flight. Most airlines charge a fee for pet travel. Pets fly in the under compartment of the plane which is air controlled just like the cabin. Sometimes small sized dogs or cats can be carried on board. Most airlines allow only dogs or cats. If you have small sized dogs and cats, typically under 23 pounds, you may be able to bring them on board in the cabin.
When planning your pet travel remember that you'll need a pet carrier. The best pet carriers are of the proper dimensions and style that your airline allows. If not you could end up having to purchase a carrier at the airport from the airline. These carriers aren't fancy and are expensive. You can use soft-sided carriers if they are water repellent and have ventilation on at least two sides. When your pet will be traveling in the checked compartment be certain that the carrier is at least large enough for your dog or cat to stand up and turn around.
While the flying compartment for pets may have breathable air it isn't always temperature controlled. This can make air travel uncomfortable in extreme heat or cold conditions. In fact many airlines have strict day-of-travel temperature requirements. The airlines won't accept pets that are checked on extremely hot days – typically over 85° as well as on days that are lower than about 45°. Restrictions for snub-nosed dogs may be stricter. Keep in mind that these restrictions are for the health and well being of your pet.
Make sure that you get a good collar and identification tag for your pet and that they wear it during the flight. If they aren't used to wearing a collar get them used to it beforehand. The same holds true for your pet carrier. If your pet has never been inside the pet carrier it's a good idea to get them accustomed to it before the flight. Try getting them used to it by letting them stay in it while in a familiar surrounding. Make sure that your dog or cat has access to water during the flight.
